Hua Jin is a visual artist born in China who currently lives and works between Montreal and Vancouver, Canada. Jin received her MFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal and her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. Jin has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows across Canada, China, the United States, Mexico, Holland, and Iceland. One of her works is permanently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal, and her large-size photo works were exhibited at the Canadian Pavilion during International EXPO 2020 in Dubai. Jin has participated in several residencies and has received over 30 awards and grants, including the inaugural award of Cultural Diversity in Visual Arts presented by the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. Jin's works are featured in private and public collections, including the Canada Art Bank, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada Global Affairs, the City of Montreal, the Montreal Art Council, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai.
Jin's practice includes photography, video, and installation. Nature serves as her primary source of inspiration. As a Chinese-Canadian artist, Jin's way of thinking is inherently rooted in Eastern culture and philosophy. Her focus centres on nature and landscape, akin to that of an ancient Taoist, dedicated to contemplating the "way" of being. Jin is fascinated by the invisible energy guiding the rhythm within the circle of life. Through visual representations of various facets of natural life, she aims to depict this rhythmic flow, convey its hidden wisdom, and illustrate the diverse phenomena in the ecological world. Through her work, Jin strives to produce a profound sense of awe for nature while instilling a sense of awakening—recognizing the interconnections and interdependence between various forms of life through contemplative visual experiences. Jin is drawn to the profound beauty inherent in nature, which uplifts the spirit, recognizing its profound contribution to human well-being. Additionally, Jin's work delves into concepts of permanence and change, the passage of time, and the transient nature of existence.
Jin is particularly interested in exploring the spiritual, inspirational, and meditative aspects of nature, She believes that only by interpreting human narratives from nature's perspective—a broader viewpoint—can we realize that our shared commonalities transcend our differences.
Jin appreciates the support for her many projects from both the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
